In March, I went for a 4D3N trip to Bangkok. Till then, I haven’t stepped out of Singapore and Malaysia. Of course I was hella excited! :)
It was a bargain because my family went through Groupon and bought Thai Airway tickets + 4D3N at True Siam hotel + Half day tour for less than $400 ^^
Day 1
Tickets to a getaway!
Won a $10 Changi Airport voucher previously in their tea session :D
Which I exchanged for 3 packets of JELLY BEANS YUM~ :D
Anyway, I can’t believe I discovered a flavour worse than liquorice – PEAR. Yucks! I didn’t know PEARS can taste so horrible. :(
Was watching Life of Pi on the plane :) It was an inspiring tale but I found the movie slightly hyped up. I figured the book would be more convincing and touching.
Well, I didn’t really like the food on Thai Airway. I found the noodles all right and bread and butter can never go wrong. But, I could barely touch the cold macaroni and the coffee cake was overly sweet. Bleah.
Here’s our lovely lovely lovely hotel – True Siam :D :D :D
Upon reaching, I was impressed by the wooden traditional furniture and clean polished look of the place.
That’s the door to the reception.
That’s an open restaurant which I’ve never seen a single customer patronise in my 4D3N there.
This is the reception area with the door to the lift.
Did I mention I’m a sucker for wooden stairs?
Here’s one of the lovely decorations down the stairs :D
Well, I’m definitely full of praises for our hotel :) Apart from the lovely furniture concept, I found the service to be superb. Best thing was that the hotel gave us a deluxe room for no additional costs!! That’s because I went with my Mum and my Bro. So, I added an extra bed to the room. As they didn’t want us to squeeze so much, True Siam gave us a perfectly huge and spacious room :D
Here’s the comfy bed on an elevated platform! Again, I’m a sucker for that.
Here’s the mini kitchen~
Here’s the living room~
There are tons of channels on the TV but I ended up watching MTV and some China channel most of the time.
Did I mention we have a freaking balcony?!!
However, there are some downsides to the place, Even though True Siam is conveniently situated within walking distance of an MRT station, it is a far fetch from hotels that are within walking distances from all the attractive shopping malls. It’s located along a small alleyway (which is pretty safe) but some taxi drivers aren’t very sure where the hotel is located unless you show them the hotel card.
Also, I think this is a general thing in Bangkok, but I hate their toilet flushing system :( Instead of in Singapore where all your “stuff” just flush downwards, your “stuff” kinda swirl around from top to bottom in Bangkok, which I found super disgusting so I will avoid looking at the toilet bowl. *shudders*
By the time we reached our hotel, it was already close to 6pm. My family tried walking to Platinum Fashion Mall, which was super fail. We were simply walking along the road and perspiring under the hot setting sun. Thankfully, my Mum had us cabbed there. Because of the crazy traffic jams and us being tourists, the cabs would normally switch off the meter and charge us a fixed price, but it was still pretty cheap compared to the taxis here in Singapore.
Dined at the food court in Platinum Fashion Mall~ You have to buy a card at the counter and top up the card with cash. Subsequently, when you buy food at the stalls, all you have to do is hand over the card and swipe!
That’s the mango sticky rice in Platinum Fashion Mall :) I love how the coconut milk on the sticky rice makes it so gooey and delicious~ No mangoes in Singapore can beat those fresh ones in Bangkok either! I’m salivating now man YUM YUM YUM :D
What better Thai food to eat than Tom Yam? Tom Yam in Singapore definitely fails in comparison to Bangkok’s! Rather than being just spicy, Tom Yam in Bangkok is more sour and flavourful. The taste tends to stay in your mouth longer too.
According to my Mum, Bangkok is famous for its bird’s nest. Well, I never knew that. We bought this bowl of bird’s nest for less than $2!! Can you see the portion of bird’s nest given?!
Hmm, I didn’t like the Tang Yuan there because the ginger soup was waaaaaay too strong for my liking.
My Mum said that Bangkok is famous for its shark’s fin too. Well, I didn’t know that either. Bought this huge bowl of shark’s fin for less than $10!! Unlike Singapore’s shark’s fin where you don’t really know what you are eating, you can really taste the shark’s fin there with those tiny edible bones. Well, I know it’s inhumane to eat shark’s fin, but just this once yup…
Like Koi is to Singapore, Coco is to Bangkok.
Day 2
Woke up at freaking 6AM for the tour -.-
That’s the breakfast place in True Siam~
Can I emphasise again how much I love wooden furniture?
Too bad I don’t really eat breakfast. I really really really like the Dongfen in Bangkok, especially the one up therel! :) Normally, the Dongfen in Bangkok is kinda sour and spicy, but it tasted more normal here LOL.
A lone pancake~ I found it too sweet. Even without maple syrup. Bleah.
What’s breakfast buffet without cereal? Found it amusing that True Siam uses Meiji milk too LOL (I saw them refilling)
Saw this flower at the entrance of True Siam while waiting for the tour van! Isn’t it just so pretty? ^^
Boat tour!!
Sights on the ride! I can’t remember what is what cos I was dying from a throbbing headache from the lack of sleep -.- But I remember Apple (our Guide) mentioning about how the King used to ride on the boat along the river before cars were invented. There used to be floating markets in this river too. But they have become obsolete because of cars. Oh man boats are way cooler than cars k :(
Look! Wat Arun!
This is pretty cool :) Nearing the jetty of Wat Arun (I think), Apple sold us bread for 20 Baht to feed the fish for blessing. There are tons of fish gathered there cos they know tourists will throw bread at them :P LOL I try to throw my bread to the fish furthest away from the boat ^^
Inside the temple at Wat Arun.
You can get the monk there to bless you with a bracelet :)
A statue we passed by on the bus :) I’ve no idea what it is but it’s famous LOL.
Went to a honey place~
Was heading towards 4 Faced Buddha :) A boy came up to the tour bus to sell us cheaper flowers to pray! Aren’t they pretty?
4 Faced Buddha :)
I had a super hard time trying to manoeuvre through the joss sticks and lighted candles to put my own in! LOL I think I got burnt like 5 times! -.-
To wash up!
Haha you can even pay people to dance and play instruments while you pray!
A random Thai restaurant we went to for lunch :D
Another must-try in Bangkok – coconut ice-cream! :D I found this a tad too hard for my liking though.
Brinjal sticks + Tofu + Sauce! Although I hate brinjals, I have to admit that this is damn delicious! :)
You can tell how much I love the Tom Yam there ^^
Red Curry! Rather than being spicy, it is sweeter and holy I love those chicken that melts in your mouth! :D
Signed up for an impromptu trip to Siam Niramit :) If I’m not wrong, it’s about $80 per person for an international buffet dinner and performance. Trust me, it’s worth it.
Look! Elephants!! :) Hehehehe I even gotta feed one with cucumbers! It’s pretty cool seeing how it will stretch out its trunk and just grab the cucumber and stuff it into its mouth omnomnom~
You even get to ride them!!
International buffet :) I think the food there wasn’t that nice…
The Dongfen was sour! I know it’s supposed to be sour, but it’s still weird.
Their Tom Yam was freaking freaking freaking spicy!!! :( I could barely drink it!
Dish that saved their reputation – SPAGHETTI :D Admittedly, I’m a sucker for pasta, so I wandered off to this isolated corner that sold it. You got to choose your pasta, the toppings you want, the sauce and this lovely Thai lady will cook it for you ^^ YUMMMMMM~
And can I just reiterate how delicious the fruits in Bangkok are?!! Gosh I’ve never eaten such sweet watermelon and pineapples in my life!! Know what, I have stopped eating pineapples for years because I didn’t like the prickly aftertaste on the tongue, but Bangkok’s pineapples are just pure sweetness. Roses without thorns LOL.
Watched a Thai dance performance :) Can you spot my mum (trying to) dance?
Those are rice crackers which tasted pretty nice! Glad I got the chance to eat it here cuz I couldn’t really find it around Bangkok…
A couple of random shots of the tour around the gardens. Oops, I realised some photos look rather scary… :S
Went to watch the marvelous performance in Siam Niramit – which won the Guinness World Record for the largest stage in the world!! Sadly, I wasn’t able to take any photographs during the performance. But it was seriously very impressive and a MUST-WATCH!!
Firstly, the hall was mother father gigantic biggy! It puts all the Esplanade Halls, Victoria Concert Halls, blah blah blah halls to shame man!!
Secondly, the performance was simply mind-blowing! For me, I really love the arc in Hell where everything was just so believable. It made me feel like I never wanna commit any of the sins for I never wanna land in Hell. I especially love the scene when a river just appeared on stage and you go like, “WTF?!! Where did that come from?!”
Thirdly, even though Siam Niramit is a tourist attraction, I feel that you really got to understand the cultural history in Bangkok, especially since Bangkok is now a pretty modernised city.
Day 3
Hotel breakfast! :)
Went back to Platinum Fashion Mall for a major shopping trip! :) I simply love this place!! Everything is so neatly arranged – with each level selling different items from jeans to women wear to men wear to accessories to children wear etc etc! ^^
Also, being a wholesalers’ place, it’s the value-for-money place! Just buying 2 pieces and above will allow you to get the wholesalers’ price which is normally around 200 Baht for each piece = $8 in Singapore! What’s more?! ITS QUALITY IS DAMN GOOD!!
It’s so value-for-money that I haven’t had the face to bargain with the shopkeepers anymore cos everything is just so cheap cheap cheap ^^
That’s my shopping haul from the Bangkok trip which costs me less than $150!! :D I bought nearly 75% of the stuff from Platinum Fashion Mall and I didn’t regret buying a single item there (though I kinda regretted an item or two from elsewhere).
Hehehehe I was especially happy that I got this Paris vintage necklace for about $5 when the exact same item was sold for almost $30 in Singapore and online!! :D :D :D
Although Bangkok is a great place to shop for clothes, I couldn’t really buy any shoes (meh quality) bags (only a mint satchel caught my eye but it was already bought away by someone else T___T) or my Achilles’ heel – rings (mostly large bling bling rings there ewww)!!! I’m sad to say that only a vintage ship anchor ring caught my eye throughout the whole trip and it costs nearly $20!!! T___T
An interesting observation I made was that there was this machine outside the toilet in Platinum Fashion Mall selling (1) tissue k can (2) sanitary pads ooo k how convenient (3) pregnancy kits WTF too convenient can LOL ^^
Dinnered in MK Restaurant! :) I chanced upon this place while researching for Bangkok restaurants online – MK Restaurant was highly recommended by many reviewers and it’s found almost everywhere in Bangkok! So here we are!
Refreshing drink for everyone!
Watermelon drink! I’m full of praises for this drink because it’s so freaking refreshing and cooling and sweeeeeet! Dayummmm try their drink if you are there!!
Having eaten tons of meat over the past few days, my family opted for the vegetable set and a couple of meat dishes.
After knowing that MK Restaurant was a steamboat place, I was kinda disappointed at first, “How delicious can steamboat get?!” But mannnnn was I wrong ^^ Perhaps the raw food in Bangkok was fresher cuz the food tasted more flavourful in a natural way LOL :) You must try their pork slices there! It’s simply heavenly!! :D
Went back to Platinum Fashion Mall for a marvelous Thai massage :) Ahhhhh~ I felt that all the stiffness in my back was gone! Miraculously LOL!! ^^
Day 4
Our final breakfast T___T
You can probably tell by now that I’m not a breakfast person LOL ^^
Walked to the nearby subway station to take the train to Chatuchak Weekend Market :)
Saw this building full of tuition centres from the station!! Oh my monopolistic competition much?
Here’s the train!! :D
Hahaha I had a rather pleasant experience on the train :) Honestly, it’s a much much better alternative to private transport considering that Bangkok is sooooo famous for its jams. A 10 minutes drive can take at least 30 minutes because of the crazy traffic jam. Fortunately or unfortunately for the people in Bangkok, the King gave a huge subsidy for people buying new cars last year. It made me kinda appreciate the crazily high prices of COE and ERP in Singapore -.-
Here’s the mouth watering coconut ice-cream in Chatuchak Weekend Market :D It was a generous serving on a half sliced coconut with tons and tons of toppings and just look at that cute flag!! And it costs less than $2!!! :D
Hahahaha it was so delicious we bought a serving for each of us ^^ And we were lucky to buy from this stall because the other places we walked past gave much small servings with minimal toppings :(
AND WE GOT A FLAG. (I sound like Sheldon Cooper LOL)
If I’m not wrong, that’s the famous Bangkok dish – Pad Thai :) Hmm it tasted slightly different from the usual noodles not bad not bad ^^
Bought Bangkok milk tea and holy moly it was such a huge and refreshing cup of milk tea!!! :D
Got a serving of Mango Sticky Rice ^^ Hehehehe we can’t get enough of it man! It’s much cheaper in Chatuchak Weekend Market but if I remember correctly, the fruit wasn’t chilled :(
Got a culture shock when we saw Bangkok people selling peeled pomelo!
Overall, Chatuchak was hot hot hot -.- It got so bad towards the end that I barely had the energy to take photos. We only managed to walk for like 4-5 hours. It was a big freaking maze selling so many things – from clothes to pottery to dried food. You have to get a map to find your way around the place.
Sadly, I didn’t manage to buy much from Chatuchak :( I bought a couple of shorts back for ~$4 each and I was rather disappointed with the quality :(
Haha I suggest going in the evening when the sun is less freaking glaring for it was an eye opener – especially ALL THE FOOD MMM~
Goodbye Chatuchak~
As I previously mentioned, Chatuchak was crazily hot. We dropped by this tuition building near our hotel to grab coffee and malted milk :) I remember them being pretty bland, but sufficiently refreshing for our dying selves.
Ticket back home :(((
That’s my dinner~
Some observations I made in Bangkok:
1. It’s pretty inspiring how the Bangkok people really respected their King. Everywhere you go, his face is present – whether it is along the road or in a car. And I admire the way the tour guides and drivers spoke of their King with pride, “Our King loves his people a lot.” Compared to us Singaporeans who often diss our Government, Bangkok showed much gratitude to their leader.
2. Being used to the “empty” streets in Singapore, I had a culture shock when I saw beggars in Bangkok. The first I saw was huddled under a blanket and carrying a silent baby. Thinking back, I wonder if it’s a form of business I read on Facebook, where babies were drugged such that they remain silent or worse still – dead – while women were forced to beg with these poor babies. Apparently, this is a form of thriving business in certain countries. Zzz. How sickening is that. The second I saw was an old lady wrapped in a veil and OMG HER WHOLE FACE WAS SAGGING. As in, the eyes, the nose, the cheeks and everything! Holy I thought such people only exist in movies…?! :X The last I saw was an old man with an infected leg. He rolled up his pants and was sorta showing off the infected wound on his leg while crawling around the entrance of Chatuchak. It was pretty scary and most tourists were in fact frightened off rather than being sympathetic to his plight. After this trip, I’m glad that at least the people in Singapore got to sell tissue papers on wheelchairs. Not saying that we shouldn’t help them though.
3. One of the most distinctive features of Bangkok is their transvestites. There were so many of them that every time I see a lady with heavy make up, I will check their neck for an Adam’s apple. Apple said that the reason behind the large number of transvestites in Bangkok was that in every Thai show, there’s definitely a lady man (not ladies’ ma k). Growing up, the Thai boys started to think that it’s all right to be a lady man, which… slowly led to one thing and another.
Overall, Bangkok is a Singaporean’s paradise – with tons of cheap and freaking, annoyingly, unbelievably delicious food and lots of cheap, pretty, incredibly high quality clothes! :D :D :D Hehehe I will definitely come back to Bangkok with a credit card!! :P
